The history of the development of flat glass in China.

Believe that older friends have the impression that in the 1980s and '90s, a lot of people liked to put a big glass on their desk. Why? The reason is simple: in the last century the nineties the wooden table is not very good, mostly in the form of fast-growing poplar or pine board, brush with tung oil layers of varnish, so the desktop will be yellow or black paint colour. The wood surface is very soft, the pen point one force will draw a mark on the table, and once touch water, do not wipe clean in time, the next day opportunity to plump up a big bag, pockmark is uneven. So the wise working people put a piece of glass under it, but they were much stronger and less afraid of water. The glass is flat and hard. It can be used to improve the writing efficiency under the paper, and it will not be uneven and uneven. It is a very good desktop material. So once you get cheap flat glass, every Chinese white-collar worker wants to put a piece on a wooden table. This is the glass panel desktop common in various offices in China in the 1980s and 1990s.

China's typing technology lags behind, while flat glass technology ranks first in the world, so for more than a decade, white-collars with hard pens have used flat glass to harden the desktop. Other countries have either made it to the early stage of typewriters or flat glass technology, so there is no history of using glass to spread the table. In short, don't look too cheap on cheap flat glass. It was one of China's biggest industrial achievements.

Glass is not crystal, it solidifies very brittle, but there is no definite crystal structure to maintain the shape, it is difficult to process. For a long time, glass products should not be too sophisticated, large and not precise. Flat glass although there is huge demand on Windows and doors, but in a long time, limited to technology, large pieces of flat glass or too expensive, or simply, not suitable for white-collar workers to lay the table.

Specifically, until the 1970s, all plate glass was made by mechanical method, with the specific operation of rolling, drawing, and pulling. But no matter what kind of approach, are nothing more than the glass heated to melt, in between the liquid and solid state, and then used to make the plane, mechanical processing and children there is no essential difference between doing silly putty.

Using iron roller to knead the dough, obviously the efficiency is low, the quality is poor, the stress distribution is uneven, and the blowing method is closer to the manual workshop, and the quality is completely out of control. Cheap furniture bought by the commoners, few of them are undistorted, and today they are all distorting mirrors. Therefore, the plate glass at that time generally needs to be cut into small pieces to be polished and corrected before it can be truly flat, and large pieces of flat glass are luxury goods. Before the '70s, the Windows were divided into small squares because the cost of using the whole plate was too high.

But in nature, because of the existence of gravity, a plane is the most common form of geometry -- if the material becomes liquid. And glass melts very easily. So by the end of the 1950s, the British had taken the lead and turned to "float" to make flat glass.

This technology, however, simple principle, tin is poured glass liquid in the liquid, under the effect of gravity, the glass on the surface of flat because of gravity, because the gravity of the liquid and the surface is flat and level, and then gradually cooled flat glass formation. But consider, operational details have a lot of problems, such as how to precisely control the thickness of the glass, how to control the melting state of tin, how to remove the cooling of the glass, how the cooling at the same time maintain continuous production, and so on. Britain, as the old industrial countries, take out big capital development, finally to reach a breakthrough in 1958, set up the first continuous production of float glass production line, to start producing cheap large plate glass.

China also wanted to fill the house with glass Windows, but the British themselves had just figured it out and refused to let it go. Ask big brother of the Soviet union, the Soviet union also won't; The Chinese are gambling with their own research. It was a gamble, and it was done.

In May 1971, the ministry of construction materials of the state decided to carry out the float industrial test in luoyang glass factory. So glass experts from all over the country went to war with him. This is the history of building materials known as the "thousand battle."

Float glass in China is a new business, without any reference, the experiment encountered wave after wave of difficulties. At that time, there was no large-scale lathe equipment, and the crochet workers used tinker to make up the pot, and processed 25 meters of small tin slots on site. The biggest problem is that high temperature glass is easy to condense through the tin trough, resulting in uneven glass thickness, and sometimes the glass water splashes in the tin trough, and the workers are covered with injuries. In industry experts fought more than three months later, on September 23, 1971 succeeded in producing the first piece of float glass in China, its mechanical strength, smoothness, light transmittance is superior to other flat glass. With the wisdom and hard work of superman, lobo has made the Chinese dream of floating. Its birth, has opened up a new era of China's glass industry transformation and development, to become the world's glass industry keep pace with the pilkington, Pittsburgh in one of the world's three big float process.

From the British invention of float technology in 1958, the Chinese people heard the wind in the 1960s. In 1971, luoyang float glass was put into production, with only 13 years in the middle. In the absence of foreign technical assistance, Chinese companies have stepped on the heels of the world's most advanced companies, for the first time in industrial history. Due to the process from beginning to end is developed, the technology and accessories are no bottleneck, so China leap progress of flat glass industry that, in turn, overlooking some obvious than China developed country.

Over the past few decades, no matter how expensive the luxury goods, as long as the Chinese have mastered the full set of technology, a decade of inevitable production explosion, price collapse. The plate glass industry caught up with the world's advanced level in 1971, so flat glass is the first Chinese product to sweep the world in a technological mass. By the end of the 1980s, China was already the world champion of flat glass production -- eight years before the world's largest steel production. The farmer's home built a new house finally did not paste the paper, instead of a dozen yuan piece of glass window.
